March 4,1960

After the explosion of a French-owned cargo vessel in Havana's harbor, Fidel Castro went public and announced that the United States was planning to invade the island nation at any moment. Thousands of Americans evacuated the island in the middle of the night, including Camilo, who was in Havana to attend the funeral for the mother of former Cuban president, Carlos Prio-Socarras. Prio had been instrumental in Castro's rise to power, but was broadsided by his communist turn-of-foot. This press photo shows one of the very last groups of Americans to leave that night and land on U.S. soil, on the Pan-Am Clipper. Camilo is at the top of the stairs.
